Calendal Plan de Dieu Cotes du Rhone Villages 2009 Case

Keep this one to yourselves please! We don’t want to let the cat out of the bag so to speak. This was one of the most impressive wines I tried this year in the Rhone Valley, it drinks way above its Cotes du Rhone Village status.

Domaine Calendal is joint venture between Giles Ferran of Domaine de Escaravailles and the pre-eminent southern Rhone consultant Philipe Cambie. They jointly own this tiny 4 hectare vineyard that is planted 75% Grenache and 25% Mourvedre, the wines are stunning and in very short supply, rarely have I come across a wine with depth and structure like this, it is worth every penny. We have a tiny allocation of 5 dozen bottles. Drink 2012 - 2018

Domaine des Escaravailles Cairanne Les Ventabren 2009 case

We have been championing the cause of this excellent estate for a number of years now, and as they become better known our allocations seem to dwindle, such is life. If you are yet to try any of the sumptuous wines the 2009 ‘ Le Ventabran’ Cairanne is a great staring point. The secret to this vineyard is the age of the vines and very low yields. The ‘Le Ventabren’ is made up from 70 year old Grenache, 35 year old Syrah and 60 year old Carignan. The wine is showing beautiful concentrated dark red fruits with fresh acidity great tannins. Drink 2013 – 2020

Villa Wolf Case

4 x Villa Wolf Riesling Dry 2008

Flavours of apple and a kind of exotic fruits, fresh and harmonious. There is also a stony purity that is characteristic of Riesling from the Pfalz, and which carries through on the palate. Excellent richness and solid structure make this full and surprisingly powerful wine which shows good length and a crisp, dry finish. Perfect with food, but also a great aperitif.

4 x Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rose 2009

A true rose, this has a lovely, pale salmon colour, with bright strawberry and plum aromas. The fruit is very forward, but has a delicate gentleness which is in perfect balance to the wine. This is an off-dry style so you get a juicy blast of fruit on the palate, with good persistence on the finish. There is a gentle firmness in the centre of this wine that focuses its softer edges.

4x Villa Wolf Pinot Noir 2007

The Villa Wolf Pinot Noir is new addition to the line. It features very forward dark cherry fruit that is juicy and ripe, but with a firm structure and a spicy mid-palate. Barrique aging gives it a smoky depth and a nice touch of earthy tannins. A very grown-up Pinot for the price, this is another excellent wine for every day at the dinner table. Elegant, varietally true Pinot Noir from Ernst Loosen, one of the worlds most celebrated winemakers.
